Drug markets and violence: evidence from Brazil

Examiners: Gustavo Gonzaga, Joana da Costa Martins Monteiro.Brazil experienced income growth during the 2000's while at the same time sustaining high homicide rates, especially in the North and Northeast regions where homicide rates soared. Using data from the Brazilian Health Ministry on drug related hospitalization, we provide preliminary evidence on the possible positive impact of income on homicide rates, through the drug markets channel.
