The Department of Economics, one of PUC-Rio eight Social Sciences Departments, was established in 1963. By the end of the 70s, it had already become one of Latin America´s most prestigious Economics education and research centers. The Department offers students an undergraduate course, as well as a Master’s Program and a PhD Program, known for their excellence.

The Department’s research activities focus on Economic Development , Applied Econometrics, International Economics, Economics of the Public Sector, Labor Economics, Finance, Economic History of Brazil, Macroeconomics, Industrial Organization and Economics Theory.

Results of the Department’s research programs have shaped and influenced the making of Brazilian economic policy.
